Inspector Srivastav is framed by a wily and cunning gangster, J.K., and unable to prove his innocence, hangs himself, leaving behind his wife, and son, Vijay. Years later, Vijay has grown up and has joined the police force as an Inspector. Unlike his dad, he is corrupt and does accept bribes to turn a nelson’s eye to crime. The City Police are assigned the task of apprehending a customed man called “Shahenshah”, who operates at night and targets, tries and kills gangsters in a “Judge and Executioner “style. No one knows the real identity of Shahenshah, as he is feared by the police department, and respected by the poor and middle-class.

The residents of Bharatpur treat the Thakurs like court appointing them to take decisions on behalf of everyone in the form of a judge which is then accepted by everyone regardless of right or wrong. While passing a sentence for his nephew, Jagannath who have been accused of rape; Ghajraj Thakur is gun down by his brother-in-law. Who in his dying state incarcerate his brother-in-law, his sister, Manorama and Jagannath by outcasting them from the village for a few years. Dharamraj alias Dada Thakur takes over from his dad and continues to mediate justice to the villagers; only to learn that he must assign a verdict in the form of a fair punishment for his younger brother Arjun who is found guilty in a rape and murder case – a verdict that may very well cost Dada Thakur his life.

Dil To Pagal Hai indulges in its romanticism but what I found great about it is its totally realistic portrayal of young artists. Chopra strikes an amazing balance between contemporary culture and poetic romanticism. While some of the dialogue is a bit cheesy, most of it is actually very real and has some sense of everyday reality. Chopra portrays the troupe of Shahrukh as a totally modern one, while the character of Madhuri and her soft romantic nature is actually deprecated even by some of the characters in the film itself. But the whole theory of the film, which tries to convey a message that somewhere someone is made for you, is quite interesting and inspiring despite its cheesiness. The film is never overly melodramatic or gushing in its emotional quotient. It tries to present itself as a simple love story, which does not work with a larger-than-life story but rather an episode in which true romance comes in the middle of happy-go-lucky, hardly-romantic people.
